Bergamote, La
2101 Sherbrooke E. Sherbrooke métro. Bus 24

Tel. 525-5738. Tuesday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Sunday.
$35 for two before wine, taxes and service. Table d'hôte: $7.50—$13.50 (noon); $13.50—$19.50 (evening).

A homey, tasteful little burrow under the aegis of an avuncular Frenchman, always ready to share his delight in good red meat and a palate-caressing Cahors. The romanticism of candlelit stone walls, the graciousness of a reasonably priced table d'hôte, and an original, affordable wine list conspire to satisfy one's nostalgia for France. Or to bring it once more to the surface. As if that's not enough, the owner bakes his own bread, and serves his rabbit's liver mousse as an appetizer. There’s also a private room that can accommodate twelve people.

Sample menu: Snail cassolette with pastis, brioche with melted brie, maple salmon, duck breast in Cahors wine, filet mignon in agreen pepper sauce, noix de petoncles et leur corail, chocolate-Calvados mousse cake, praline-chocolate cheesecake, hazelnut-chocolate terrine.
