Café Ferreira
1446 Peel. Peel métro

Tel. 848-0988. Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to I I p.m. Saturday, 5 p.m. to I I p.m. Closed Sunday.
$70 for two before wine, taxes and service. Table d'hôte: $13.95—$22.50 (noon); $18.95—$25.95 (evening).

Grand prix (ex aequo) 1997 of the Montreal Business Design competition, this swanky downtown restaurant is worth a visit, if only for the decor. Fortunately, there's also the cuisine of Marino Tavares: salted cod, clams in white wine, and black olives to nibble at idly while cogitating about the wall of broken dishes. Decent wine cellar with a good fifty varieties of port and Muscatel available by the glass. The ubiquitous olive oil on the table.

Sample menu: Caldo verde soup, shrimp bisque, grilled octopus, Ferreira squid, pork sausages marinated in red wine and grilled in eau de vie, jumbo shrimps à la portugaise, sardines a la portugaise, Ferreira cod, clam sauce with sliced porkfilets, crême brûlée.
