Went to ChuChai the other night. Finally—excellent vegetarian Asian cuisine. Yeah, I tried Manbo when it was in Chinatown and I've eaten at a few other vegetarian Chinese places in NYC and Vancouver but my benchmark has always been Hong Kong (Hey, ya get what you can).

ChuChai is definitely up there. Not cheap cheap Chinese but good and worth it. The fake chicken, shrimp, pork and duck are made from soy based products and brought in from Toronto and New York.

The vegetarian chicken with coconut and basil was superb, with the soy strips having the colour and texture of tender breast meat. Hey, I'm not into serious tunatarianism but when it's good, its good. Go for the four-person menu de dégustation ($20 apiece).

Sample menu: Spicy soup with lemongrass and veqetarian shrimp, spicy soup with coconut and vegetarian chicken, peanut sauce dumplings, vegetarian duck salad sprinkled with pepper and mint leaves, sautéed vegetarian chicken with eggplant and basil, vegetarian fish with three hot sauces, vegetarian beef and potatoes with yellow curry and coconut milk, fresh mangoes and sticky rice in coconut milk, coconut milk tapioca. —
