El Amigo
51 St-Zotique E. De Castelnau métro. Bus 55 South

Tel. 278-4579. Every day, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. $25 for two before beer, taxes and tip. Table d'hôte: $11.95—$16.95 (evening).
Regale yourself with pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador comprising a hand-flattened corn cake stuffed with chicken, cheese, black beans and plantain. Slake your thirst with a Corona con limôn, and wonder how it took you so long to discover this jewel. There are also Mexican and Spanish dishes on the menu, and delicious homemade (not too oily) empanadas. Best of all, though, is the down-home, unpretentious, come-as-you-are atmosphere. Live music from wandering troubadours (they wander from table to table) from Friday to Sunday nights, inclusive. Conscientious, bilingual (French and Spanish) service. Local yet exotic, in fact particularly universaI.They invest in the food, not the décor.

Sample menu: Tamales, empanadas, guacamole-fried plantain pupusas with cream, onion chicken, Mexican quesadillas, fried tacos, paella valencia, seafood casserole, Salvadorian plate, caramel flan.
