Le Muscadin
100 rue St.-Paul East, Old Montreal

Closed Sundays. Tel.: (514) 842-0588

Absolutely romantic building in Old Montreal. Greeting was prompt and pleasant. Coats whisked away and seated in non-smoking near the front window. The puffers were four tables away as there is no separate room for those of us who have given up the foul weed.

Bruschetta arrived and immediately scored "10" on the bread scale. I'm with Lesley Chesterman. If there's a better bruschetta in Montreal, I haven't had it. Decent tomato and cheese topping and every morsel consumed eagerly.

Appetizers were a mix. Significant other's minestrone was excellent and full of al dente cooked vegetables and pasta. My crisp and perfectly "plated" endive salad was ruined by an avalanche of dried oregano and an insipid vinaigrette. Could only consume about one-third of the portion.

Both of us had the veal rollatini special stuffed with ricotta. Veal was tender enough, but the dish was rather tasteless. Potatoes and carrots completed the plate. I can't help but wonder if they didn't exceed their herb allocation on the endive above.

We did not order dessert, but the coffee was excellent. In short, a lot of potential here, but serious lapses in the culinary department. The room deserves better.
