Opus II
Westin Mont-Royal Hotel, 1050 Sherbrooke W. Peel métro

Tel. 849-6787. Monday to Sunday, 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday to Saturday, noon to 2:30 p.m. Every evening, 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.$85 for two before wine, taxes and service. Table d'hôte: $17—$20 (noon).
Opus II has boasted several talented chefs (not the least of whom was Nicolas Jongleux), but—perhaps due to the union employees, and the unfortunate concomitant attitude—has had difficulty in translating that talent to the table. Still, the cuisine française with a dash of American nouvelle cuisine is rather better than the average downtown fare. Relaxing but contemporary décor with a central salon to sip an aperitif while awaiting your table. Good view of the passing wildlife on Sherbrooke Street.

Sample menu: Smoked salmon tarte fine with caviar crême aigrelette, vegetable croustillant with semi-smoked fowl on an anise sauce, blinis and Molossol caviar, honey and spice duck magret, farm fowl cooked in yellow wine with a creamy polenta, calf sweetbread croustillant with coriander gravy, Bourbon vanilla mille-feuille with apple sauce and Valrhona chocolate powder over almond-paste ice cream.
