Tonnerre de Brest
1134 Van Horne. Outremont métro

Tel. 278-6061. $35 for two before cider, taxes and service. Table d'h,5te: $12.95—$15.95 (evening). Tuesday to Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
A change is as good as a holiday, and a comely Breton pancake house that isn't a hackneyed display of all the tired tourist bromides is both. Owner Monique Pouxel even brought her crêpières (cast-iron cooking platters) with her from Brittany. Choose from the plats du jour or, better yet, try a buckwheat pancake to see why she was willing to pay the hefty freight charges.
Quebec or French cider by the glass or the bottle. For an apéritif, the Morsure de Serpent (half cider, half beer) will also send you on a little trip.

Sample menu: Fish soup, mouclade, duck preserve salad, buckwheat pancakes, Toulouse crêpes with cheese, peasant crêpes with bacon and mushrooms, Tonnerre de Brest crêpes (smoked salmon and capers), wheat crêpes with pears and chocolate, banana crêpes flambéed with rum, Normandy crêpes flambéed with Calvados.
