Tehran
5065 De Maisonneuve W. Vendôme métro

Tel. 488-0400. Tuesday to Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. $15 for two before taxes and service. Table d'hôte: $7—$11 (noon and evening). Cash only.
Westernized and veiled Iranians alike flock to this incredibly low-priced restaurant. Every day the menu proposes specialties that are as copious as they are flavourful, accompanied, what's more, by a more than nominal salad or soup, and followed by Iranian tea. The kingdom of kebabs and red pearls (a dried cherry) soon has us naturalized by dint of generosity and consideration. And you don't need to be an oil sheikh to pay the tab! No liquor permit, no B.Y.O.B. Many customers place their order by telephone, and take it out. Try the docgh, a carbonated, salty yoghurt drink. An acquired taste. Large, free parking lot across the street. The Sedeghi famlly will gladly serve you in French, English or Iranian. Leave the tip with the waiter. Iranian social club. Taxi driver hangout. "Tourists" made to feel at home.

Sample menu: Spinach soup, mixed salad with eeplant and tomato purée, chicken with tomato sauce, filet mignon brochette, saffron chicken brochette, salmon with green rice, lamb knuckles with fennel, spicy beef ragout, rice with red pearl berries.
